TIH 017 2022 Hawaiian Monarchy Overthrown

January 17, 2022: In history, on this day in 1893, Samuel B. Dole led a group of American sugar planters in a coup to overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy. Removing Queen Liliuokalani from her authority, the Americans established a provincial government with Dole as president. These events led to the eventual annexation of Hawaii by the United States, and in 1959, statehood.

The daughter of Henry VIII, Elizabeth’s reign was quite substantial. The period of her reign, which included the presence of William Shakespeare, is known as Elizabethan England.

TIH 014 2022 Treaty Of Paris

January 14, 2022: In history, on this day in 1784, the American Revolutionary War officially ended with the ratification of the Treaty of Paris by the Continental Congress. In the treaty, Great Britain recognized the independence of its thirteen colonies as the United States of America. Both the Americans and British agreed to release all prisoners of war. The two countries also made agreements concerning land and property. Included in the property to be returned to the British were a number of slaves.
