January 30, 2022: In history, on this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, was assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu extremist. After decades of leading non-violent protests against the treatment of poor Indians by the British government, as well as protests against Muslem-Hindu violence, Gandhi was gunned down while protesting. His persuasive methods of civil disobedience influenced leaders of civil rights movements around the world.

TIH 019 2022 Indira Gandhi

January 19, 2022: In history, on this day in 1964, Indira Gandhi became the first female leader of her country. She was also one of the most controversial prime ministers in India’s history. In the 1970’s, when food shortages and regional disputes led to civil unrest, Gandhi was criticized for using strong-arm tactics to deal with these problems. Her strong-arm tactics for dealing with political opponents and the Sikh secessionist movement in the early 1980’s led to her assassination in 1984.
