January 29, 2022: In history, on this day in 1861, Kansas became a state. Leading up to this event there was much turmoil over the issue of slavery. Most settlers in Kansas were anti-slavery. But Missouri, which borders Kansas, was a slave state. Groups of pro-slavery Missourians tried to make Kansas a slave state by fraudulently voting in Kansas’s referendums. After years of violent skirmishes over the slavery issue, Kansas was admitted to the union as a free state.
