On This Day In History
On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produced an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet. The oil shower signalled the advent of the American oil industry.
The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet. Initially it flowed at a rate of approximately 100,000 barrels per day. It took nine days to cap. Up until that time petroleum had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps. Following this discovery petroleum became the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes. Steam ships and trains, which had been powered by coal also converted to the liquid fuel.

Vandals Deface White Cliffs In Italy
On Saturday, Sabrina Lattuca, the mayor of Realmonte, found that vandals had thrown iron oxide powder across the white cliffs known as the Scala dei Turchi, or Staircase of the Turks. It was a bloody red stain on Realmonte’s principal tourist attraction.
By nightfall, much of the damage had been undone by a crew of cultural heritage experts, municipal workers and local citizens who spent the day scrubbing the site with the aid of mops, brooms and water pumps.
“They are an example of the best of Sicily,” Ms. Lattuca said of the people who helped with the cleanup.
Talks On Ukraine Deadlocked Over NATO Expansion
In Geneva, after seven hours of negotiations, it appeared that the United States and Russia could not find a path to an agreement. With the U.S backed by NATO and the Russians have already deployed troops to the border with Ukraine, the talks have failed so far in any sort of agreement.
The United States is firmly against Russia taking over the Ukraine by force. On the other side, Russia does not like NATO and wants the U.S. to prevent the Ukraine from joining NATO. The Russians responded by demanding that the Ukraine be rejected by NATO. The U.S. reacted by standing up to the Russians, defending NATO, and supporting the Ukraine’s campaign to join NATO.
